Tunica County, MS - Hollywood Casino RV Park

We have always enjoyed riverboat gambling - Mississippi style. We started vacationing in the Gulfport/Biloxi area long before we ventured into full time RVing. Our favorites were the Grand in Gulfport and the Isle of Capri in Biloxi. The Isle of Capri was also our favorite hotel. When we went RVing we stayed at the Military RV parks at the Naval construction base at Gulfport and the Kessler AFB at Biloxi. After they were severely storm damaged we shifted our travels to Tunica County up near Memphis and used the numerous casino campgrounds. We have used all of them so there will be more postings in this area.

The Hollywood casino is one of four casinos located at the very southern end of Casino Strip Resort Blvd. It does not have the largest parking spaces but it has location. The RV park is bordered on two sides by the golf course - you can walk to the clubhouse - Another side is near the employee parking lot and the last is the park office and back entrance to the casino. There are eight handicap - big rig - sites behind the park office. From there you cross a two way park road and enter the back entrance to the casino. All RV park residents have access to that entrance.

The park office also acts as the resident ticket office for any bus/van tours of the local areas atractions including an all day round trip to Memphis and back which includes lunch at a rustic Beale, St. location.

All of the area casino RV Parks offer big rig parking and FHU sites. If you’re just interested in parking for the night you can park in one of the large parking lots and hitch a ride to the casino with a passing shuttle.

Prices are very reasonable with a wide range of discounts and comps are available making parking there for extended stays very attractive to the full timer.

In the pictures below we are meeting our friends who are going to winter with us in the San Diego, CA area. They are coming in from IL and we are down from the Michigan UP. (Nice up there in the summer time. It's another story coming soon).

Don is a dog lover but I suspect he might be flirting in a couple of the pictures.

These pictures are just a few from our all day Van tour of Memphis. We had lunch at the Rum Boogie Café and were taken to all the most popular land marks. We even found Elvis.

Amarillo, TX - Fort Amarillo RV Park & Resort

On our last west to east cross country trip we separated from our traveling friends at Williams, AZ as they were going west to CA.

While traveling east on I-40 we caught up with a huge Midwestern storm front that was threatening the Mississippi delta country in the Memphis area. We decided to hunker down in Amarillo, TX. After browsing all of our campground references for that area we decided on the Fort Amarillo RV Park & Resort. The sites there were all level pull thru and plenty long enough. The Park is located on a frontage road with very easy access to and from I-40. A super Walmart is less than five miles away.

The parking sites in the section of the park where we were assigned all had privacy fences. Very narrow but still had everything needed. The unique thing is all connections are located in each fenced-in parking area. In other words, only your rig’s sewer connections can be seen while inside your fenced-in area. The pictures below will depict it better than I described it.

If you ever stay there, allow some time to browse the Lizzie Mae Mercantile. Trinkets galore!

We ended up spending five days there. The Mississippi crested well below flood levels and I-40 was wide open all the way past Memphis. The pictures below show the water level as we approached the Mississippi at Memphis, TN.

I almost forgot to get pictures of our site as it rained almost all the time we were there. I was already hooking up the trailer when I took the pictures. A lot of other rigs had already left earlier, especially those heading north on US-385 or US-287.

Yermo, CA - KOA

Because there are so many military RV Parks/Campgrounds in California we seldom stop at civilian campgrounds in that state. Here is an exception. While traveling with our friends west out of NV on I-15 I was in the lead trailer and behind an 18 wheeler. When the 18 wheeler made a sharp move from the RH to LH lane I followed him but was a little too late and hit the very large tire tread he was trying to avoid. I barely missed it with the truck tires but it went under the RH side of our trailer and hit both RH tires. The front one blew immediately and the rear one was almost flat by the time I got stopped in the emergency lane.

After replacing the destroyed tires with my spare and my friends spare, neither one of us had a spare , so new tires were needed right away. Baker, CA was not far down the road so we drove on to CA. No trailer tires there but the garage manager called ahead to Barstow, CA and found a place that had them. We decided to drive on because there was a KOA near there in Yermo, CA.

Now this KOA has a crazy layout. They built it around the existing trees/shrubs and you have to actually zigzag into many of the sites. Other than that we found it a great place to stay in the desert. It was spring and the weather was dry and smog free. The kids working there were super helpful with all inquirers/requests. The camp store was well stocked and the prices were very reasonable. We were impressed with the whole operation. We spent two nights there and enjoyed every minute of it. Got some replacement tires - also at a very reasonable price - and got the spares squared away.
Here are a few pictures of the parking sites at the KOA. Click on any one to make it larger.
