Wapwallopen, PA.

Sometimes it's a great adventure just hunting for and getting to a campground when it's more than just a few miles off your major route. And that's just what happened when we went hunting for Moyer’s Grove CG in Wapwallopen, PA. It was down narrow roads and well secluded in the PA countryside. Our site was a FHU under acorn trees that were dropping their acorns all night. Had the wind been blowing I dare say we would not have got much sleep. Not many RV patrons. Mostly homesteaders and seasonal users. It was clean and well kept but not very friendly. The office store was well stocked.

Between the CG and the interstate we found a very friendly country store with reasonable fuel prices, with all grades, including diesel #2.

Another advantage of coming this far off a major highway to find a campground was the rewarding views of the PA countryside during clear and warm skies. And, now we can say we’ve been to another place in PA with a unique name.

Las Vegas - The Circus Circus

This stop at Las Vegas was a very special occasion. We were traveling with our long time friends - Don & Betty - and Don’s daughter was getting married in one of those neat little wedding chapels. Family members were coming from all over the country, including a brother from Hawaii. All were staying at various Strip hotels. So we splurged and made a two week reservation at the Circus Circus RV Park.

Now the Circus Circus RV Park is a KOA managed facility. It’s very unique as the entire RV parking areas are paved like a parking lot. All sites are FHU with 50 amp service. If you’re there in warm/hot weather you better have good air-conditioning because shade is not available.

From your site you can walk to the back entrance of the casino and then ride one of the belt type people movers to the strip where you can catch a bus or cab to any other locations. We like the bus rides. They will take passengers all the way downtown.

There are a lot of other RV parks in and around Las Vegas and Nellis AFB has a Campground on base if you qualify to stay there.

Here are a few pictures of the RV parking area, two at one of our stops along the strip and another at the wedding chapel.

Cropwell, AL

The Black Crappie is a large sunfish. They can grow to 16” long and weigh up to 5 pounds but are usually much smaller. They live in warm water ponds, lakes, streams and reservoirs. They are schooling fish, so when you find one, others are sure to be close by. They are a very popular pan fish because they don’t have a “fishy taste".

Whenever traveling across I-20 in central Alabama we will stop here at the Lakeside Landing RV Park & Marina for a few days of fishing. And, that Black Crappie is the fish I covet. Easy to clean and cook and has a great taste void of the fishy taste many other similar pan fish have.

I always carried an electric trolling motor and extra marine battery when full timing so I could rent Jon boats. A few years ago I found and purchased a small dingy. Not very heavy but it will carry me and a reasonable amount of fishing equipment. (See what happens when we stay in these SC foothills too long. Snow on my truck before we got headed south - LOL!).

You will soon see that a lot of our regular stops have some sort of fishing available.

I cant find a web page for the RV Park. They used to have one that was very informative and had an activities listing that is very important to know about when heading their way because they are often full whenever the NASCAR folks are racing at Talladega. There are at least four major fishing activities on this chain of water every year and the park will be loaded for each of them. Here are a couple of web sites for your travel logs.

We also stay at another RV Park in this area right on I-20 when we are just staying overnight. It’s in Pell, AL but will be another post some time soon.

Here are some pictures of the park and the beautiful water areas. The Park store is well equipped and has everything needed for a fishing outing including all sorts of bait including crickets, worms and minnows. I think shiners are seasonal.

The last picture has been cropped so you can view the hitch. I noticed it because it was another Everest and then I saw the Goose-neck adapter. I never found the owner at home so didn’t have a chance to ask about it’s differences.

Marianna, FL - Arrowhead RV Park

Shellcracker>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Snuggled up on the GA & AL borders you will find Marianna, FL. The Arrowhead RV Park is situated on one of the best pan fish lakes in FL. World class shell crackers and crappie abound. We like to arrive in FL early for a couple of weeks of great fishing. The RV Park has nice sized FHU sites. They have jon boats for rent so all you need is a trolling motor which I always have with me. Actually boats are not needed when parked at this campground. There are three piers jutting out into the lake edge that provide great access for tossing some bait out into the lake. Pan fish are plentiful and the kids love the chance to get the “big” one.

There is a super Walmart less than two miles from the park.

A beautiful public golf course (9 holes) is close by. Fox squirrels can often be seen roaming around the
fairways.

Tunica County, MS - Hollywood Casino RV Park

We have always enjoyed riverboat gambling - Mississippi style. We started vacationing in the Gulfport/Biloxi area long before we ventured into full time RVing. Our favorites were the Grand in Gulfport and the Isle of Capri in Biloxi. The Isle of Capri was also our favorite hotel. When we went RVing we stayed at the Military RV parks at the Naval construction base at Gulfport and the Kessler AFB at Biloxi. After they were severely storm damaged we shifted our travels to Tunica County up near Memphis and used the numerous casino campgrounds. We have used all of them so there will be more postings in this area.

The Hollywood casino is one of four casinos located at the very southern end of Casino Strip Resort Blvd. It does not have the largest parking spaces but it has location. The RV park is bordered on two sides by the golf course - you can walk to the clubhouse - Another side is near the employee parking lot and the last is the park office and back entrance to the casino. There are eight handicap - big rig - sites behind the park office. From there you cross a two way park road and enter the back entrance to the casino. All RV park residents have access to that entrance.

The park office also acts as the resident ticket office for any bus/van tours of the local areas atractions including an all day round trip to Memphis and back which includes lunch at a rustic Beale, St. location.

All of the area casino RV Parks offer big rig parking and FHU sites. If you’re just interested in parking for the night you can park in one of the large parking lots and hitch a ride to the casino with a passing shuttle.

Prices are very reasonable with a wide range of discounts and comps are available making parking there for extended stays very attractive to the full timer.

In the pictures below we are meeting our friends who are going to winter with us in the San Diego, CA area. They are coming in from IL and we are down from the Michigan UP. (Nice up there in the summer time. It's another story coming soon).

Don is a dog lover but I suspect he might be flirting in a couple of the pictures.

Don't forget to click on the pictures to start the slide show which makes them larger.

These pictures are just a few from our all day Van tour of Memphis. We had lunch at the Rum Boogie Café and were taken to all the most popular land marks. We even found Elvis.

Amarillo, TX - Fort Amarillo RV Park & Resort

On our last west to east cross country trip we separated from our traveling friends at Williams, AZ as they were going west to CA.

While traveling east on I-40 we caught up with a huge Midwestern storm front that was threatening the Mississippi delta country in the Memphis area. We decided to hunker down in Amarillo, TX. After browsing all of our campground references for that area we decided on the Fort Amarillo RV Park & Resort. The sites there were all level pull thru and plenty long enough. The Park is located on a frontage road with very easy access to and from I-40. A super Walmart is less than five miles away.

The parking sites in the section of the park where we were assigned all had privacy fences. Very narrow but still had everything needed. The unique thing is all connections are located in each fenced-in parking area. In other words, only your rig’s sewer connections can be seen while inside your fenced-in area. The pictures below will depict it better than I described it.

If you ever stay there, allow some time to browse the Lizzie Mae Mercantile. Trinkets galore!

We ended up spending five days there. The Mississippi crested well below flood levels and I-40 was wide open all the way past Memphis. The pictures below show the water level as we approached the Mississippi at Memphis, TN.

I almost forgot to get pictures of our site as it rained almost all the time we were there. I was already hooking up the trailer when I took the pictures. A lot of other rigs had already left earlier, especially those heading north on US-385 or US-287.

Yermo, CA - KOA

Because there are so many military RV Parks/Campgrounds in California we seldom stop at civilian campgrounds in that state. Here is an exception. While traveling with our friends west out of NV on I-15 I was in the lead trailer and behind an 18 wheeler. When the 18 wheeler made a sharp move from the RH to LH lane I followed him but was a little too late and hit the very large tire tread he was trying to avoid. I barely missed it with the truck tires but it went under the RH side of our trailer and hit both RH tires. The front one blew immediately and the rear one was almost flat by the time I got stopped in the emergency lane.

After replacing the destroyed tires with my spare and my friends spare, neither one of us had a spare , so new tires were needed right away. Baker, CA was not far down the road so we drove on to CA. No trailer tires there but the garage manager called ahead to Barstow, CA and found a place that had them. We decided to drive on because there was a KOA near there in Yermo, CA.

  http://koa.com/campgrounds/barstow/snapshot/

Now this KOA has a crazy layout. They built it around the existing trees/shrubs and you have to actually zigzag into many of the sites. Other than that we found it a great place to stay in the desert. It was spring and the weather was dry and smog free. The kids working there were super helpful with all inquirers/requests. The camp store was well stocked and the prices were very reasonable. We were impressed with the whole operation. We spent two nights there and enjoyed every minute of it. Got some replacement tires - also at a very reasonable price - and got the spares squared away.
Here are a few pictures of the parking sites at the KOA. Click on any one to make it larger.
